42. Elżbieta Lukrecja (Elizabeth Lucretia) * 1 June 1599 + 19 May 1653
The daughter of Adam Wacław and Elizabeth of Kurland, the daughter of Gotard Kettler. In 1618, against her will, she was given in marriage to Gundaker, the Prince of Lichtenstein, from whom she then separated. After the death of her brother Fryderyk Wilhelm, after a turbulent trial with the Habsburgs and with the special permission of the Emperor, she gained dominion of the Duchy. She was the last of the Piasts to rule the Duchy of Cieszyn. After her death Emperor Ferdinand II took possession of the Duchy, granting it to his son, Ferdinand III.
The Duchy was witness to the Thirty Years’ War during the rule of Elżbieta Lukrecja. Imperial and Swedish armies devastated the Duchy several times. Swedish armies destroyed the fortifications of the castle in Cieszyn. Foreign armies levied heavy contributions on the inhabitants, bringing the towns especially to financial ruin. In the course of this war the population of the Duchy was decimated several times by plagues and famines. The ultimate effects of the destruction visited on the Duchy of Cieszyn by successive Austrian, Danish, Neapolitan and Swedish armies, along with the numerous plagues and famines, were the economic and demographic ruin of the Duchy. As a consequence of this devastation the Duchy of Cieszyn entered a period of stagnation lasting more than a century, and Cieszyn found itself pushed onto the margin of economic life. Almost all that was left to the town was its educational institutions and, in a sense, its culture.
