Geographical info

Cieszyn is located on the River Olza, in the central part of Cieszyn Silesia, whose historical borders cover the area of the former Cieszyn Duchy.

Climate

The mesoclimatic conditions of the town are influenced by the location of this area in the western part of the Carpathian Mountains, at the borderland of mountains and mountain foothills; and also by large height differences

Soils

Soil – similarly to air and water – is a non-renewable constituent of the natural environment. Chemical, physical and biological properties of soil are influenced by natural soil-forming processes as well as agricultural and non-agricultural human activity.

Geology

Cieszyn is located within large geological unit – Outer Carpathian Mountains. The deeper substratum is built of Carboniferous rocks which occur at a depth of about 700 m in the Cieszyn area.

Ground Topography

This area is much differentiated in terms of relief. The Silesian Plateau represents an upland-hilly area whose typical feature is gentle hills of small height differences (from 70 – 130 m) and long, gentle slopes.

Ground Water, surface water

The area of Cieszyn belongs entirely to the Odra drainage basin and Baltic Sea drainage area.
