The greatest fear
among the residents of Cieszyn was evoked, in the old times, by an executioner. Cieszyn had the right to inflict capital punishment for crimes committed on its territory and as long as to the end of the Middle Ages it maintained its own Executioner, who was also lent to other towns in the region, for a fee. Executioners constituted a closed caste and even their marriages were contracted with women chosen from families that occupied themselves with the same profession. The office of Executioner was done away with at the end of the 18th century. Up to the 60’s of the 20th century there was a house of Cieszyn Executioners, at Katowska (Executioner) street (today’s Kiedronia street).
