The greatest fire
in Cieszyn took place on May 5th 1789. The whole town, except for a few little houses in the suburbs, was consumed by fire, altogether 276 houses, including all the structures of public services from the Town Hall down. The parish church also burnt down, but the authorities decided not to rebuild it. Instead, they moved the parish premises to a less damaged church by The St. Dominican monastery, closing the latter at the same time.
