The greatest political and cultural event
in the life of Cieszyn in the 18th century was the concluding of a so-called Cieszyn Peace Treaty in May 1779. Representatives of 7 European countries that were interested in signing the treaty between Austria and Prussia came to the town. The meeting ended with a ball at which Cieszyn elite appeared in the most fashionable clothes, brought from Vienna especially for the occasion. A collection of portraits of the envoys who participated in the signing of the treaty (by Daniel Donat from Vienna), together with other keepsake that commemorate the event, can be seen in the Cieszyn museum.
