The location of the oldest Town Hall
in Cieszyn is unknown. For some time the premises of the town authorities were at today’s Plac Teatralny (Theatre Square). In 1496 a new town square was set up on a market place which had been located beyond the town walls up to that time. At the same time, Cieszyn prince Kazimierz II sold two houses (that were situated at the market place) to townspeople in order to set there the new premises of the town authorities. Cieszyn Town Hall succumbed to numerous fires and was rebuilt many times, and it owes its today’s appearance (from 1845) to the design of the Viennese architect Józef Kornhausel and the district architect Andrzej Kment.
