The most important street in town
was and still is Głęboka (Deep street), also known (from the oldest records) as ul. Polska (Polish street). It linked the Castle with the Market Square, and it was the main artery of communication and commerce. Its name came from the fact that its level was much lower (deeper) than the level of the pavements and houses beside it. Authorities of different sorts imposed different names many times (Archduchess Stephanie’s street, The Legions’ street, and the Red Army street).
