The most precious stone sculpture
is the figure of Madonna with an Infant, made of sandstone. Its discovery at the beginning of the 21st century under 32 layers of paint caused a considerable sensation. The sculpture that had been in Stary Targ since 1844 is one of the most precious discoveries of mediaeval art of recent years in the whole of Europe. Its coming into being (c.1370) is connected with the workshop of Piotr Parler; an outstanding builder, architect and sculptor who worked in Prague. The sculpture is in the Cieszyn Museum and the column in Stary Targ is topped with its copy. Also the sarcophagus of Cieszyn Prince Przemysław Noszak that can be found in the parish church of St. Maria Magdalene is associated with Parler’s workshop.
