The oldest Jewish structure
in Cieszyn is a so-called old Jewish cemetery at Hażlaska street. If the argument, repeated many times, is to be accepted that it came into being as early as in the 14th century, then it would be the oldest existing Jewish necropolis on Polish territory. In reality it started to function in 1647 or immediately after, as the private cemetery of the Singer family. In 1785 it became the possession of all the Jews of Cieszyn Silesia, then – of the Cieszyn religious community and it was used until the beginning of the 20th century. Apart from the cemetery at the Remu synagogue in Cracow, this cemetery was continuously active the longest of all the Jewish cemeteries in Poland.
