The oldest mention of Cieszyn
is in Pope Hadrian IV’s bulla (from 23rd April 1155) for a Wrocław bishop Walter. Cieszyn (Tescin) is mentioned here among other castellan strongholds in Silesia, but there is no doubt that the stronghold in Cieszyn played such functions, within the state of the first Piasts, as early as at the end of the 10th century.
