The oldest museum that has been continuously in operation
in Central Europe is in Cieszyn. It was set up by rev. Leopold Jan Szersznik, an outstanding Jesuit, a versatile scholar and teacher (the museum was opened in 1802). His collection, apart from the monuments of art and history, also comprised a large natural collection (specimens of fauna and flora, fossils and minerals), cartographic exhibits (globes, maps, and plans), educational aids (geometrical, astronomical and astrological instruments), and curiosities (reliquaries, exotic tools and instruments). Of all the museums in Poland only the Czartoryskis museum in Puławy (opened in 1801) is equally old, but it had a break lasting several decades and now it is functioning in Kraków.
