Forests and Woodland
Natural forests and cover an area of approximately 206 ha in the Cieszyn area, representing a mere 7% of the town’s total area. Even if areas of woodland are included which are not formally treated as forests the total area only amounts to 11.6% of Cieszyn’s total area. This can be compared with 38% in the County of Cieszyn, 32% in the Katowice Province and 28% in Poland as a whole. Over 63% of Cieszyn’s forests are the property of the Treasury, under the auspices of Ustroń Forestry Management. All the forests in the town’s limits are protected under the relevant law dealing with forests.
Only certain tracts of forests in Cieszyn (apart from woodland within nature reserves or that may become nature reserves) have the characteristics of natural forests. Spruce dominates in the forests owned by the Treasury, accounting for 30% of trees, which are planted in unsuitable habitations. The average age of these stands is 73 years. It is impossible to describe the species and age of stands in forests which are not owned by the Treasury and do not have the appropriate forestry management documentation.
The target for forested areas in Cieszyn ought to be around 430 ha or 15% of Cieszyn’s area.
