The Pod Wałką Park

A. Dorda

The park comes from the second half of the XIXth century. Now it has a woodland park character. The “Pod Wałką” Park, together with the areas belonging to Lasek Miejski nad Puńcówką (The Communal woodland on the Puńcówka, a reserve) and “Lasek Miejski nad Olzą”(the Communal woodland on the Olza”, a reserve as well) which is situated a little further to the south, constitute the largest area of greenery in Cieszyn. The name of the park is connected with a mill and a so-called wałkownia (it was probably a place where felt was produced) that were once situated on the Młynówka stream. The fragment of the park between Al. Łyska and the bend of the Puńcówka river is characterized by a relatively orderly arrangement of the trees and some symmetry in the lay-out of the paths. The grounds on the opposite side of Al.Łyska, on the other hand, are natural in character. They include: a place of National Memorial (surrounded by a hedge), i.e. a monument to the memory of 24 Poles killed by the Nazi occupiers in 1942: a park area that has a woodland character and a camping-site with a Kajak Landing. Among the trees that grow there, a few have been acknowledged as monuments of nature. They are: the lime-trees along Al. Łyska (next to the camping-site), Scotch elms, i.e. 4 big trees that grow in pairs near a playground and are surrounded by smaller specimens of lime-trees and beeches, and also horse-chestnuts along the path near a little bridge over the Puńcówka, and honey locusts. Besides these, stately ash-trees, beeches and alders (Alnus glutinosa) attract the visitors’ attention.
